7 Signs Your Home’s Air Is Dirtier Than You Think

Most homeowners don’t think twice about their indoor air. You can’t see it, so it’s easy to assume it’s fine.

But the Bossier City and Shreveport HVAC teams at SBC Cooling + Heating see a different reality every day. The signs of poor air quality are almost always there; they just tend to get written off as allergies, a dusty house, or a quirky old AC unit.

Here’s what to watch for instead.

1. Dust Builds Up Faster Than It Should

You dusted last week. You’re dusting again.

If you’re constantly fighting a fresh layer of dust on furniture, shelves, and vents, your HVAC system is likely part of the problem. A clogged or low-quality air filter can’t trap particles effectively, so dust recirculates through your home instead of getting caught. Check your filter first. If it’s gray and packed, that’s your culprit.

Worth knowing: the standard 1-inch fiberglass filter most homes use was designed to protect your equipment, not your air. It catches large debris, but it lets a lot of the finer stuff float right through. If you’re changing filters regularly and still can’t keep up, upgrading your air filtration to a higher-MERV or whole-home system makes a noticeable difference.

2. You Notice a Musty or Stale Smell When the AC Kicks On

This one is easy to overlook because you get used to the smell of your own home. But pay attention the next time your system starts up. A musty odor right when the air kicks on is almost always coming from inside the system itself, usually from moisture that’s built up on the evaporator coil, in the drain pan, or in ductwork.

In Louisiana’s climate, that’s not a rare situation. It’s a common one. And the longer it goes unchecked, the more likely it is to become a mold problem rather than just a smell problem.

3. Allergy or Asthma Symptoms Are Worse at Home Than Outside

Here’s the one that surprises most people: the EPA estimates indoor air can be 2 to 5 times more polluted than outdoor air, and in some cases, significantly worse. Your home is a closed environment where allergens, pet dander, dust mites, and mold spores recirculate through the same air system all day long.

If someone in your household notices their symptoms are consistently worse indoors, especially in certain rooms or right after the system runs, that’s useful information. It usually means the air is carrying something it shouldn’t be. Addressing indoor air quality directly, rather than just managing symptoms, tends to be the more effective fix.

4. One Room Always Feels Stuffy

Every house seems to have that one room. The one that’s always a little harder to breathe in, a little more closed off feeling, regardless of what temperature the thermostat is set to.

That stuffiness usually means one of three things:

  • A blocked or closed vent that’s restricting airflow
  • A duct leak that’s losing conditioned air before it reaches the room
  • An HVAC system that’s struggling to move air efficiently through the full footprint of the home

Stagnant air is where pollutants concentrate. So that room that feels off isn’t just uncomfortable — it’s likely the worst air in your house.

5. Your Home Feels Clammy, Even When the AC Is Running

High humidity is its own category of air quality problem, and in the Shreveport and Bossier City area, it’s a year-round one.

A standard air conditioner does remove some moisture from the air as part of the cooling process, but it’s not designed to be a dehumidifier. When humidity stays elevated, a few things happen:

  • Dust mites thrive (they need humidity above 50% to survive and reproduce)
  • Mold growth becomes significantly more likely
  • Your home feels warmer than it is, which leads to overcooling and higher energy bills

The sweet spot for indoor humidity is between 30% and 50%. If your home regularly feels clammy, windows fog up, or you notice condensation on surfaces, a whole-home dehumidifier works alongside your HVAC system to actually solve the problem rather than mask it.

6. You’re Replacing Air Filters Way Too Often

Filters typically need changing every one to three months depending on your household. If yours look filthy after just a few weeks, pay attention to that. It means there’s a high volume of particulates circulating through your air, and your system is catching more than it should have to.

Frequent filter loading can also point to duct leaks that are pulling in unconditioned air from attic or crawl space areas, bringing insulation particles, dust, and whatever else is up there right into your living space. A professional AC maintenance visit can identify whether the issue is filtration, ductwork, or something further upstream.

7. There’s Visible Mold Near Vents or on Walls

No nuance needed here: visible mold near supply or return vents is a serious problem. It means moisture is present in or around your ductwork, and wherever there’s visible mold, there’s almost certainly more you can’t see. Mold spores travel through your air system and spread quickly.

If you see dark spots or discoloration near vents, don’t just clean the surface and move on. Get a professional assessment before continuing to run the system, because running it is how the problem spreads.

So What Do You Do With This?

Start with the basics: stay current on filter changes, check for visible moisture issues, and make sure vents are open and unobstructed. Then have your system inspected by someone who can look at the full picture, including duct integrity, coil condition, drainage, and airflow.

Most of these problems are fixable once you know what you’re actually dealing with. The tricky part is that indoor air quality issues tend to be gradual, so they rarely feel urgent until they’ve been building for a while.

The Shreveport or Bossier City HVAC pros at SBC Cooling + Heating work with homeowners throughout the area on exactly this, from basic maintenance to full HVAC system evaluations. If something on this list sounded familiar, that’s worth following up on.
